Where to See Live Jazz in Connecticut

Updated June 2026 · 6 min read

The short version

Connecticut over-delivers on intimate jazz. The Side Door in Old Lyme and Firehouse 12 in New Haven are world-class listening rooms that book genuinely top-tier touring players, while the Hartford Jazz Society — the country's longest-running — presents shows including a free summer series in Bushnell Park.

For a small state, Connecticut has a remarkably deep jazz scene — the kind of lineups you'd expect in a major city, often in rooms with fewer than 100 seats. If you want to actually hear the music, these are the places to be.

The Side Door Jazz Club, Old Lyme

The Side Door Jazz Club, at the Old Lyme Inn on Lyme Street, is Connecticut's premier jazz room. It's small, elegant, and acoustically excellent, and it consistently books nationally touring jazz musicians — the sort of bill you'd cross a state for, in a space where every seat is close to the band. You can pair the show with dinner at the inn beforehand, making it a complete night out on the shoreline.

Best for: top-tier touring jazz in an elegant, intimate room.

Firehouse 12, New Haven

Firehouse 12 on Crown Street in New Haven is the modern counterpart — a sleek, soundproofed performance space attached to a recording studio, seating around 75. Its seasonal concert series leans toward contemporary, modern, and experimental jazz, and the listening-first room (and on-site bar) make it a favorite of serious fans. See our New Haven guide for the wider scene.

Best for: modern and experimental jazz in a studio-quality room.

The Hartford Jazz Society & free summer jazz

Founded in 1960, the Hartford Jazz Society is the longest continuously operating jazz society in the country. It presents concerts throughout the year and, in summer, a beloved free jazz series in downtown Hartford's Bushnell Park. It's the heart of the capital region's jazz community — and a great, no-cost way in. (See our guide to free concerts in CT.)

Best for: free outdoor jazz and a connection to the local scene.

Beyond the clubs

Jazz turns up all over the Connecticut calendar. Intimate halls like Infinity Music Hall and The Kate regularly program jazz and Americana; the state's universities (Yale, Wesleyan, UConn) host strong concert series; and small clubs and coffeehouses across the state slot jazz into their weekly calendars. For the smallest, most intimate rooms, see our best small venues guide.
