The Ridgefield Playhouse: A Complete Guide

Updated June 2026 · 5 min read

The short version

The Ridgefield Playhouse is a 500-seat nonprofit in southwestern Connecticut that books an astonishing number of big-name musicians, comedians, and tribute acts — often several a week — in a room small enough that there's no bad seat. Set in a restored 1930s school auditorium, it's one of the best value-for-intimacy tickets in the state.

Plenty of small venues book local and regional acts. The Ridgefield Playhouse books the kind of names you'd expect at a venue ten times its size — and that combination of star power and intimacy is exactly what's made it a beloved fixture of the Fairfield County scene.

The Playhouse (~500 seats)

With about 500 seats, the Playhouse runs one of the busiest and most eclectic calendars in Connecticut: touring musicians across rock, folk, jazz, and pop; stand-up comedy; tribute shows; classic-film nights; and live broadcasts. The draw is simple — you can see a genuinely famous performer from a few rows back, in a setting that feels more like a private show than a concert. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, it reinvests in programming and keeps the lights on through memberships and community support.

Best for: seeing big names up close in an intimate room.

From school auditorium to playhouse

The building began life as the auditorium of Ridgefield's old high school, designed in the late 1930s — a space that hosted school events, town meetings, and even wartime concerts before falling into disuse in the 1970s. In 1994, local residents formed a nonprofit to rescue it, and after restoration the Ridgefield Playhouse reopened around 2000, preserving the room's original acoustics while adding modern stage, lighting, and sound. It's a classic Connecticut story: a community saving a building and turning it into something special.
