Indie & Alternative Shows in Connecticut
New Haven is Connecticut's indie capital. College Street Music Hall books the national indie tours, Space Ballroom (Hamden) and Cafe Nine catch rising and underground acts, and Toad's Place and the outdoor Westville Music Bowl round it out — much of it booked by Manic Presents, longtime promoters of the CT underground.
If you like catching a band before everyone else does, Connecticut — and New Haven especially — is a great place to do it. Here's the map of the state's indie and alternative scene.
The flagship: College Street Music Hall
College Street Music Hall is New Haven's indie standard-bearer — a beautifully restored ~2,000-capacity hall that books national indie, alternative, and crossover tours downtown. It's where the genre's bigger names play when they route through Connecticut.
Best for: national indie tours in a great mid-size room.

For rising and underground acts, two rooms lead. Space Ballroom in Hamden — booked by Manic Presents — is the room for touring indie, emo, and alternative on the way up, and Cafe Nine in New Haven is the beating heart of the local and garage scene. These are where you catch tomorrow's headliners tonight (see our best small venues guide).
Best for: discovering rising indie and alternative acts up close.
More of the scene
The legendary Toad's Place mixes indie and alternative into its storied calendar, and in summer the outdoor Westville Music Bowl brings bigger indie, jam, and Americana headliners to New Haven. For the full city picture, see our New Haven guide — and for the louder end, our rock, punk & metal guide.
Best for: rounding out an indie-loving night in New Haven.
