The Shubert Theatre, New Haven: A Complete Guide
The Shubert Theatre is New Haven's grand historic house — a 1,600-seat theater that opened in 1914 and earned the nickname the "Birthplace of the Nation's Greatest Hits" as a legendary pre-Broadway tryout venue. Today it hosts touring Broadway, concerts, dance, and comedy at 247 College Street downtown.
Connecticut has plenty of historic theaters, but few have a place in American cultural history quite like the Shubert. For much of the 20th century, the road to Broadway ran straight through this New Haven stage.
The theater (~1,600 seats)
The Shubert seats about 1,600 and sits at 247 College Street, in the heart of New Haven's theater district near Yale. It opened on December 11, 1914 — built by the Shubert brothers and designed by architect Albert Swasey — and today runs a full season of touring Broadway productions, concerts, dance, comedy, and family programming. The scale and acoustics make it New Haven's go-to for big seated shows.
Best for: Broadway tours, concerts, and dance in a grand historic hall.

For decades the Shubert was one of America's most important pre-Broadway tryout houses, where producers tested new plays and musicals on New Haven audiences before risking a New York run. The theater has hosted more than 600 out-of-town tryouts and over 300 world premieres — including landmark Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals like Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music. That history is the source of its enduring nickname.
The theater struggled in the 1970s and closed in 1976, but the City of New Haven acquired and restored it, and the Shubert reopened in 1983 — back in business as the cornerstone of the city's stage scene.
