Classical Music & Symphony Concerts in Connecticut

Updated June 2026 · 6 min read

The short version

Connecticut has a deep classical tradition. The Hartford Symphony plays the Bushnell; the New Haven Symphony (founded 1894, one of the oldest in the U.S.) plays Woolsey Hall at Yale; the Greater Bridgeport Symphony plays the Klein; and summer brings outdoor classical at the Talcott Mountain Music Festival and chamber music at Music Mountain.

From historic concert halls to outdoor summer festivals, Connecticut offers a remarkably rich classical calendar for a small state — anchored by several long-established orchestras. Here's where to hear them.

The Hartford Symphony Orchestra

The Hartford Symphony Orchestra is the capital region's flagship, performing its main season at the Bushnell — the grand 1930 hall whose acoustics and scale suit a full orchestra beautifully. In summer, the HSO heads outdoors for the Talcott Mountain Music Festival at Simsbury Meadows, trading the concert hall for a lawn under the stars.

Best for: a full symphonic season in a landmark hall.

The New Haven Symphony & Woolsey Hall

The New Haven Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1894, is one of the oldest orchestras in the country. It performs its main-stage concerts at Woolsey Hall on the Yale campus — a magnificent 1901 auditorium — and at the Lyman Center at Southern Connecticut State University. Woolsey Hall is also home to the acclaimed Yale Symphony Orchestra, so the building hosts world-class orchestral music throughout the year.

Best for: historic orchestral music in a storied hall.

Around the state & into summer

Classical music reaches across Connecticut. The Greater Bridgeport Symphony has called the Art Deco Klein Memorial home for decades; the Norwalk Symphony plays the Norwalk Concert Hall; and Stamford, Waterbury, and New Britain have their own orchestras too. In summer, Music Mountain in Falls Village runs one of the country's longest-standing chamber-music festivals. Many of these concerts happen in the same grand historic theaters that host the rest of the state's live music.

Best for: finding orchestral and chamber music near you, year-round.
